How To Draw a Black Cat 🐈: Step-by-Step Tutorial

Hi, I’m Ophelia Loom from Art of Pencil, and today we’ll draw a Black Cat together in pencil. Grab your HB pencil and let’s start right away. It only takes 8 simple steps, and each one builds smoothly into the next.

Black Cat Drawing Tutorial

Step 1: Basic Body Shapes

Draw a large oval for the body and a smaller circle for the head. Keep your lines light and loose.

Step 2: Spine and Leg Guides

Add a gentle guideline through the body for the spine. Sketch simple lines to show where the legs will go.

Step 3: Head and Ears

Refine the head shape slightly and add two triangle ears on top. Make them sharp but not too large.

Step 4: Simple Legs and Paws

Draw the front and back legs using simple cylinder shapes. Add small ovals at the bottom for paws.

Step 5: Tail and Silhouette

Add a long curved tail and connect the shapes into one clean cat outline. Now the pose should feel clear.

Step 6: Face Details

Draw two almond-shaped eyes, a tiny nose, and a simple mouth. Add a few whiskers for character.

Step 7: Clean Fur Lines

Smooth the body outline and add slight fur edges around the neck and back. Sketch small claw details on the paws.

Step 8: Final Outline and Black Fill

Erase extra construction lines and redraw the final contour neatly. Then fill the cat in solid black while keeping the eyes and whiskers clear.

Final Thoughts

Great work — our black cat is finished! Keep practising this shape, try new tail curves, and soon you’ll be drawing cats from memory with confidence. 🎨
